St. John's Wort

St. John's Wort - 2, 4 oz St. John’s Wort has been long used as a folk remedy for the treatment of depression. It’s believed that the complex chemical makeup inside St. John’s Wort, consisting of Hypericin and Pseudohypericin, is responsible for its antidepressive and antiviral properties. Other constituents such as Xanthones and Flavonoids are also believed to contribute to its medical actions. The mechanism that causes St. John’s Wort to act as an antidepressant is clearly not understood. It was earlier believed that the herb lightly inhibits the enzyme monoamine oxidase (MAO) which is responsible for the breakdown of two brain chemicals - serotonin and norepinephrine. By inhibiting MAO and increasing norepinephrine, St. John’s Wort may exert a mild antidepressant affect. The antidepressant affects of St. John’s Wort were thought to be due solely to hypericin, but it was discovered hypericin doesn’t act alone. St. John’s Wort relies on many interplay’s of constituents for its antidepressant actions along with blocking the receptors that bind serotonin. Caution should be observed. St. John’s Wort makes the skin more light sensitive. Persons with fair shin should avoid direct exposure to the sunlight and VU. St. John’s Wort should not be used at the same time with other antidepressants. St. Johns Wort should not be used during pregnancy or lactation.

Contents: Each 1oz provides 30 full dropper servings of, 50mg of St. John's Wort extract in a base of Purified Water, Vegetable Glycerin, Natural Flavor, Steviosides, Citric Acid, Zinc Gluconate.

Cancer - "In experiments using mice, hypericin was shown to accumulate specifically in tumor tissue. When these hypericin-treated mice were irradiated, tumor growth was inhibited. Similar results have been found in human tumor cell lines. Hypericin was taken up by the tumor cells, rendering them more vulnerable to the killing effects of specific types of light. These results suggest that hypericin can be used as a phototherapy tool when treating cancer." Hypercin might be useful as a transport agent to get cancer-killing nutrients into cancer cells. It is already being tested for use with orthodox Photodynamic Therapy (PDT).
